After tests and several years with rental of the NS 6400 Diesel locomotive from MAK, NSB decided for 20 locomotives of a similar type, with a stronger Caterpillar 3516DITA (2135 HP) for the freight services. MAK was taken over by Siemens and NSB Di 8 got electrical/technical equipment from Siemens instead of ABB. Di 8 were delievered in 1996-97 with the loco number 8.701-8.720. After the NSB cargo division, the locomotive came to CargoNet in 2002. Di 8 are in use for freight service all over Norway, also on the electrified network. Ten Di 8 locomotives weresold to Scotland in December 2011. The locomotive has a length of 17380 mm, weight of 82 tons and with a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
