M61 was mostly used for passenger service all over Hungary. Around 1980 the M61 m were repainted in the new orange colour scheeme with variation due to personal preferences from the drivers. Many M61 locomotives are preserved, among others M61.01, 61.10, 61.017 og 61.020.
20 M61 were built by Nohab in Sweeden and delivered to MAV 1963-64., not without strong prostest from Russia, who wanted to delivered the russan built "Taigatrommel"
Technically identical with the NSB Di3a, only with the later stronger 567D motor with a output of 1433 KW.
